Does an abnormal genetic test result mean I’m definitely going to have heart problems?

Many abnormal genetic test results do not mean a 100% certainty for you to have a heart problem. Many genetic tests only tell you about your risk to have a heart problem. This may be called an “abnormal” or “positive” test result, which can sometimes be confusing. Testing positive for a mutation in a gene associated with an inherited heart condition usually means that you have an increased risk for a heart problem, compared to people without that mutation – it does not mean that you are 100% going to have a heart problem. Some people with a gene mutation associated with an inherited heart condition never actually get a heart problem, but they do have an increased chance for one over their lifetime. In addition, they can pass the gene mutation to their children, who can develop the heart condition.
