Genetic test results give you information (data), which can be grouped into two categories – research and clinical data. Although it is all information about your genes, there are important differences to know. Keep in mind that your gGap sequencing data is research data.
Research genetic data:
Optional to receive, following research genetic testing
Can be considered “exploratory”
May be used to better understand existing or new genes
Does not require the same quality standard as clinical genetic data
Must be verified by clinical genetic testing to see if clinical genetic data gives the same results
Is generally not information that your doctor or genetic counselor can use to plan for your medical care
Clinical genetic data:
Information based on current scientific knowledge, not “exploratory”
Carefully reviewed and held to a mandatory high-quality standard
Information that your doctor or genetic counselor can use to plan for your medical care
