You might be feeling that you won’t know the “right” things to ask during a genetic counseling appointment. That’s completely normal.

The good news is that genetic counselors are trained to guide the conversation. You don’t need to arrive with a perfectly prepared list of questions. A genetic counseling appointment is a collaborative, supportive discussion focused on learning about you, your health concerns, and your goals—and helping you understand what information and options may be most useful.

Many people come to this page looking for a list of questions, and we’ll get to those shortly. First, it can be helpful to understand how genetic counseling can support people in different situations and what genetic counselors typically discuss. This context may help you think about what you want to ask or talk about.

Different Reasons People Seek Genetic Counseling

People come to genetic counseling for many reasons, and your questions may depend on where you are in your journey.

If You’re Experiencing Symptoms or Seeking a Diagnosis

Some patients come to Genome Medical because they or a loved one have unexplained symptoms or a suspected rare condition. In these cases, genetic counseling may focus on:

  • Whether genetics could help explain what’s going on
  • What testing options might support a diagnosis
  • How testing could guide treatment or clinical trial options

If You’re Concerned About Developing a Condition

Some people seek genetic counseling to better understand how their genetics and family history may influence their own health or their children’s health — especially when a condition is already known in the family. This might include:

  • Learning if there is a higher chance of developing cancer, certain forms of heart disease, or other genetic conditions
  • Understanding if family members may also have a chance to develop the condition
  • Clarifying what screening or preventive care options may be appropriate

What Is Discussed During a Genetic Counseling Session?

Your genetic counselor will review any test results or medical records you or your healthcare team provides in advance of the appointment. While every appointment is personalized, most genetic counseling sessions cover a few key topics at a high level.

  • Your reason for seeking genetic counseling: This could be symptoms you’re experiencing, a personal or family history of a condition, genetic test results, or questions about the chance of developing a medical condition in the future.
  • Medical and family history: Your counselor may review your personal and family health history, including diagnoses or symptoms, and the age they were recognized.
  • Genetic testing options: If testing is appropriate, your counselor will discuss what tests may be helpful, what they can (and can’t) tell you, and next steps.
  • Understanding results and implications: For those who already have genetic test results, counseling focuses on what those results mean for you and potentially for family members.
  • Support and guidance: Genetic counseling isn’t just about information—it’s also about helping you process complex or emotional topics, make decisions, adjust to new information, and identify resources.

What Is Not Discussed in a Genetic Counseling Session

It can also be helpful to know what genetic counseling typically does not include, so you can plan ahead and avoid surprises.

  • Insurance coverage: Since insurance coverage varies depending on the provider and plan, your genetic counselor isn’t able to address what your specific policy may cover. If you have questions about coverage, please contact your insurance provider for clarification. Learn more about cost for genetic counseling and testing.
  • Raw genetic data from direct-to-consumer tests: If you’ve ordered genetic testing on your own, not through a healthcare provider, we aren’t able to review or interpret the raw genetic data or results. However, we can help you understand whether diagnostic genetic testing ordered through a healthcare provider may help answer your questions.

Questions You Might Ask Your Genetic Counselor

As mentioned earlier, you don’t need to come to your appointment with a list of questions—your genetic counselor will guide the discussion and focus on what matters most to you. If it’s helpful, the questions below are simply examples of topics you might want to explore or things you may be curious about during your appointment.

About Your Situation

  • What could be causing my symptoms—could genetics be part of the reason?
  • Could a genetic condition run in my family?

About Genetic Testing

  • Do you think genetic testing makes sense for me right now? Or, is it best to start genetic testing with someone else in my family first?
  • What kind of testing would you recommend, and why?
  • What could genetic testing tell me?

About Genetic Test Results

  • What does my test result mean?
  • What do I do next now that I have a result?
  • Should any of my relatives think about testing?
