April 25:
National DNA Day

NATIONAL DNA DAY COMMEMORATES THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE HUMAN GENOME PROJECT IN 2003 AND THE DISCOVERY OF DNA'S DOUBLE HELIX BY JAMES WATSON AND FRANCIS CRICK IN 1953. NATIONAL DNA DAY IS OFFICIALLY CELEBRATED ON APRIL 25.

At Genome Medical, we see National DNA Day as an opportunity to highlight our mission of giving people the power to personalize their health through access to genomic health care and genetic testing. Below, you’ll meet some of our genetic specialists and hear why they have committed their professional lives to working with DNA. We’re also sharing some patient perspectives to reflect how our work ensures they 1) can make informed decisions about their genetic health and 2) have ready access to genetic health services, if needed and/or chosen.

I was drawn to work with a digital health company that focused on genetics because of the potential reach it has for people. More access means more education and prevention grows that much more. I feel that this is one of the best uses of technology; prevention that could save lives!

I've spent the bulk of my career working in the genetics space, and being able to continue that work at a company that is increasing access to testing and the experts that can provide interpretation on results was too good to pass up. Genome Medical has a great work/life balance while providing services that help patients and families make informed decisions about their care.

With so much similarity in our genetic makeup, it's LITERALLY the little things that make us different. Variants and expression are fascinating to me, how it can vary from populations and even within families. DNA makes us who we are, but also shows you how interrelated we are from an evolutionary perspective. As DNA testing and screening becomes more and more accessible to patients, the interpretation of those tests is and will continue to be key for continuity of care. Providing patients access to the experts that can walk them through their results, talk about any impact they may have, and what to do moving forward is so important to provide value to the information someone gets with a result.

Access to genetic testing and counseling is the sort of specialized medicine that you’d most likely find at large research hospitals or the big city. A digital approach to genetic health care brings that technology into the home of every person with internet access. Genomic health is the new frontier in modern medicine, and I wanted to be a part of that journey.

In the general sense, most health care events involve reactive medicine. The patient reacts to their symptoms and brings them to the attention of their doctor, who then attempts to solve the issue. Genetics allows us to create a field of proactive medicine. Understanding a person’s individual disease risk allows them to make more informed medical decisions that are oriented around their specific needs. Preventive medicine is one of our best tools to avoid unnecessary discomfort, expense, and worry for patients and their families. In the future, I could see genetic health testing to be as common of a preventive health measure as going to the dentist. Knowledge is power and I believe that Genome Medical is putting that power directly into the hands of the average person. As quickly as medicine is evolving, I can only imagine the possibilities that access to genomic medicine could provide.

I have always had a passion for genetics and genomics and I knew I wanted to work in the field outside of being a clinician. When I came across Genome Medical, I was immediately attracted to the core values of the company and the passion everyone seemed to have for helping every person access genetic care.

The most interesting thing I have learned about genetics since working here is specifically the field of pharmacogenetics. I find it so fascinating that your DNA can tell you how you will respond to certain medications and people can do this testing and then find the perfect medication for them and their genes!
