Genome Medical experts can work with you prior to testing to identify risk of muscular dystrophy for you and your family members and confirm eligibility for Invitae’s sponsored, no-charge Detect Muscular Dystrophy program.
The Detect Muscular Dystrophy program is available to individuals in the US suspected of having muscular dystrophy with one or more of the following:
- Muscle weakness that has worsened over time (progressive)
- Elevated blood levels of CK (a marker of muscle breakdown)
- Testing right after birth (newborn screening) that was concerning for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)
- Heart or lung involvement
- Enlargement of the muscles in the lower leg (calf hypertrophy/pseudohypertrophy)
- Previous muscle biopsy that was concerning for a type of muscular dystrophy
- Other family members with muscular dystrophy*
*Please note that this program is not intended for those who are not affected with muscular dystrophy even though they have a family history

How It Works
Pre-test consultation
Talk with an expert by phone or video before your test is ordered. We review your personal and family health history, answer any questions you may have, confirm that you meet eligibility criteria for Invitae’s Detect MD sponsored testing program and select the appropriate test.
Easy ordering
If you meet the criteria for Invitae’s Detect MD program, then your no-charge Invitae order will be placed by one of our physicians at no cost. We will also coordinate the convenient collection of a DNA sample — usually through a saliva kit that is sent directly to you.
Results consultation
Review your test results with a genetic counselor or medical geneticist. During this phone or video session, you are provided an opportunity to discuss the results of your test and their implications. Genome Medical will provide you with a written summary and guidance on any actionable insights, including how your physician can integrate the results into your medical care.
Ongoing care
The Genome Medical team can offer personalized insights, clinical action plans and referrals to specialists as needed.
