Welcome to Genome Medical

GeneDx has partnered with Genome Medical to provide genetic counseling and test ordering services.

We have developed a new program to improve patient access to exome testing. This program offers genetic counseling for families with a child experiencing epilepsy/seizures, delayed development, intellectual disability or other medical and/or physical concerns. When medically appropriate, we can also order exome testing for your child.

Schedule an appointment to talk with one of our certified genetic counselors about your child’s medical concerns and learn about exome testing, all from the comfort of your own home.

If exome testing is medically appropriate for your child, and you decide to proceed, a cheek swab sample collection kit will be mailed to your home. Once the sample is received by the lab, they will begin the genetic testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Genetic counselors are healthcare providers specially trained in genetics and counseling. They educate and support patients and families who want to understand how genetic conditions might impact them. Genetic counselors also help interpret and explain a person’s unique genetic test results.

  • You will get access to the Genome Medical patient portal once you schedule your child’s appointment.
  • Complete the pre-appointment online questionnaire at least 1 day before the scheduled visit.
  • Upload medical records related to your child’s developmental/medical concerns or diagnoses. If your child has had any genetic testing in the past, please upload a copy of those results. This is very important to ensure your genetic counselor can prepare for your appointment.
  • Make a list of any questions you have for your genetic counselor.

You will receive a phone call from your genetic counselor at the time of the scheduled appointment. Appointments are typically 30-60 minutes.

During the appointment, your genetic counselor will ask about your child’s personal and family medical history and discuss how genetic testing may be able to identify an underlying genetic cause. Your genetic counselor will also address your concerns or questions about genetic testing.

If genetic testing was already performed, your genetic counselor can explain what the results mean for your child and your family.

The cost of the genetic counseling session will be up to $250*, depending on if you pay out-of-pocket or choose to bill insurance.

We are an in-network provider with many commercial health insurance plans. See a list at GenomeMedical.com/insurance-coverage. Coverage and pricing may vary. If you use insurance, and we are in-network with your health plan, we will submit a claim on your behalf. You may get a bill for any outstanding balance depending on your coverage. Please contact your insurance provider for your exact coverage and payment responsibility. Reference insurance CPT codes 96040 and S0265 and our NPI number 1407389695.

At this time, we do not accept government-affiliated insurance providers including Medicaid, Medicare and/or Tricare as a primary or secondary insurance (including Managed Medicare and Medicaid plans).

Please note: the cost of genetic counseling is separate from the cost of any genetic testing that is ordered. You may receive a separate bill from the lab if genetic testing is ordered.

Genome Medical provides care to a minor child’s legal parent/guardian(s). Children who are old enough to understand are welcome and encouraged to participate in the appointment. In many states, adolescents must participate in their visits, if they are developmentally able, in order to provide assent.

It is not necessary for more than one parent/guardian to attend the genetic counseling appointment for their child.

There may be benefits to more than one parent/guardian participating. In some situations, we may recommend testing that includes the option of biological family members, such as both parents, also submitting a sample (also called Trio testing).

Genetic testing typically involves looking at a sample from a cheek swab, saliva or blood to find changes in a person's genes. These genetic changes may be the explanation for certain medical conditions.

Genetic testing is typically done by a specialized laboratory.

Genome Medical does not perform genetic testing. As a medical practice, Genome Medical’s providers can order genetic testing, when medically appropriate, for U.S.- based patients.

Genetic testing may find a cause for a medical condition and/or identify a higher chance of experiencing symptoms of a condition in the future. Genetic test results may be useful for managing your child’s medical care.

A genetic counselor can help you understand what genetic testing may be most appropriate based on your child’s symptoms and published guidelines. Genetic counselors can also help explain what genetic test results may mean for your child and your family.

In most cases, genetic testing can be performed on a saliva or cheek swab. More rarely, a blood sample is needed.

If testing is done on a cheek swab or saliva sample, a collection kit can be sent to you in the mail and you can collect the sample from the convenience of your home. If a blood sample is needed, you may be directed to a location near you that can perform blood draws to have a sample collected. In either case, the sample then is mailed to the lab for testing to be completed.

The cost of genetic testing varies depending upon the test, the lab, and the medical insurance provider coverage. When genetic testing is medically appropriate, it is most cost effective to bill insurance. Genetic testing labs work directly with insurance providers and patients to try to make testing available at an accessible cost.

The wait time to receive test results depends on the test that is ordered. Test results are usually available in 2-6 weeks after the sample arrives at the lab.

GeneDx accepts all commercial insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and Tricare plans; details can be found at https://www.genedx.com/patient-billing/. For children with epilepsy, additional testing coverage support may be available through a Partnership Program.

Once a test is ordered at GeneDx, you may contact billing@genedx.com to obtain more information about test coverage and cost.
