What You Need to Know About Family Variant Testing

If one of your relatives has been diagnosed with a genetic condition or learned of an increased risk of a genetic condition through an Invitae test, you could have up to a 50% chance of having the same genetic risk.

After assessing your family history and risk factors, we help determine if genetic testing is right for you and ensure you are receiving the most appropriate test.

If you decide to pursue testing, we will place the order for you and ship you a saliva collection kit. You can choose whether to just test for the family variant(s) or to get a larger panel.

Invitae Family Variant Testing

If you choose to only test the gene(s) that your relative tested positive for, you can receive testing at no additional charge. To be eligible, your order must be placed within 90 days of your relative’s test report.

If you choose to get a comprehensive panel, you can bill your insurance (the majority of patients pay no more than $100 out of pocket) or pay $250 via credit card and skip billing your insurance provider. Our care team will work with Invitae to make sure you are aware of any potential out-of-pocket charges prior to testing.

During your appointment, the genetic counselor can help you decide which option is best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if family variant counseling and testing is right for me?

Family variant counseling and testing is right for you if a family member has been found to carry a disease-causing variant through an Invitae test AND you have a copy of your family member’s test results (or can get a copy before your appointment).

Will insurance cover the genetic test?

Most insurance companies will cover the test. Through Invitae Family Variant Testing, Invitae will perform family variant testing at no additional charge for all blood relatives of the original family member that received a pathogenic or likely pathogenic result through Invitae. Order must be placed within 90 days of the original family member's test report. After 90 days, family variant testing can be submitted for reimbursement to your insurance or is available at a reduced cost. Our care team will work with Invitae to ensure you are aware of any potential out-of-pocket charges prior to testing.

What do I do with the results?

You can consult with a genetic expert to go over your results, and at your request, we can communicate your results with your doctor.

Should minors get genetic testing?

While guidelines by the National Society of Genetic Counselors, American College of Medical Genetics, and the American Society of Human Genetics do not recommend predictive genetic testing for adult onset conditions until age 18, minors should get tested early for certain conditions. Some conditions manifest in childhood and might have effective medical interventions.

Will getting genetic testing have implications on my health, life, or disability insurance?

There are laws, such as the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), that protect patients from genetic discrimination. To learn more about these laws, please visit
