Frequently Asked Questions

What does Genome Medical offer?

Genome Medical is a nationwide telemedicine practice that offers video or phone genetic counseling services throughout the US. We would set up an appointment with one of our board certified genetic counseling team members to review your personal and family medical history and discuss any questions you may have regarding Lynch syndrome. We also discuss and offer genetic testing options if applicable. If you decide to proceed with genetic testing, our medical team would facilitate ordering and the shipment of a saliva kit to your home.

My family members keep pushing me to have genetic testing, however, I am not sure I want to. If I meet with a genetic counselor, do I have to have testing?

We understand that considering genetic testing can raise anxiety about how this type of information will impact your health or your family. Meeting with a genetic counselor will give you time to raise any questions or concerns you may have. Genetic counselors never push people into undergoing genetic testing. A genetic counselor will talk about the pros and cons of testing and help you with the decision making process. Genetic counselors want to ensure that you are making the right decision about genetic testing that is in line with your interests and values. Speaking with a genetic counselor should provide you with the information you need to decide if genetic testing is right for you. There is no obligation or expectation that you proceed with genetic testing. The decision is yours.

How do I schedule an appointment?

If you would like to schedule an appointment, you can self schedule via our online portal using the schedule now button. If you prefer to set up an appointment with the assistance of someone from our care coordination team, we would be happy to assist you between the hours of 8am-8pm EST by calling 877-688-0992 Monday-Friday. Be sure to mention the code Lynch49 to receive the promotional price of $49 per session.

What can I expect during an appointment?

Our genomic experts start by reviewing your family and personal history and help you understand your individual inherited risk for cancers to help you decide if genetic testing is right for you. After doing this we can guide you through the different tests offered from different labs and order the test that best fits your needs. Based on your genetic test results, we provide you and your physician with an expert clinical action plan and ongoing support to guide your care. Our appointments can be done via phone or video and typically last about 30 minutes.

I currently live outside of the US. Can I still schedule an appointment with a genetic counselor?

If you live outside the U.S., we aren’t able to offer you a consultation, but can support your physician in providing you with genetic-based care. Please contact us at clinical@genomemedical.com to learn more.

I am interested in pursuing genetic testing for Lynch Syndrome, but cannot find anyone who will order my test. Are you able to help with this?

Genome Medical is a nationwide telegenomics practice. Our clinical team includes medical geneticists, genetic counselors, primary care doctors, pharmacists and other specialists who can provide medical services in all 50 states. After meeting with a genetic counselor, if you would like to pursue genetic testing, our medical team will facilitate ordering and the shipment of a saliva kit to your home.

I have a diagnosis of Lynch syndrome, but have questions. Am I still able to schedule an appointment?

Absolutely! If you have had genetic testing for Lynch syndrome, we will review your current result with you and answer your questions. In addition, we’ll review your family history and discuss any additional genetic testing that may be indicated. In some cases, individuals have received a clinical diagnosis of Lynch syndrome, but have not had genetic testing. In other cases, an individual may have had genetic testing but genetic testing did not find a mutation. Genome Medical is a medical practice, not a laboratory, and thus, we can discuss other genetic testing options through various labs that may be able to help clarify your results and/or personal and family history.

I did not pursue genetic testing for Lynch Syndrome previously because it was several thousand dollars. Is that still the case?

No. The costs associated with genetic testing continue to go down and most insurers cover genetic testing for Lynch syndrome when indicated. In 2019, the majority of individuals diagnosed with or at-risk for Lynch syndrome have zero to little out-of-pocket cost for genetic testing. As part of the service Genome Medical provides, we will work with you to explore the right test for you and approximate cost.

My sister and I would like to attend a consultation together. Is that possible?

Yes. Genome Medical can provide virtual consultations for more than one family member at a time as long as family members are located in the United States. Please call 877-688-0992 to schedule a family appointment as our team will need to register you both as patients and schedule the appointment for additional time.

I’d like for my husband to also attend the appointment for support. Can he do this?

Definitely. You may have anyone attend your appointment for support or to be another set of ears. However, if the person attending the appointment with you is also interested in genetic testing services, he or she would need to register as a patient prior to the appointment. Please call 877-688-0992 to schedule.

How can I ensure my information will stay private?

Like all medical practices, we will never release your personal information or medical records to any third party without explicit written consent from you to do so. If ever asked by a third party company for your medical records (such as insurance companies, employers, other personal physicians) we will always request a release of records consent prior to authorizing any type of release.
