How Does it Work for the Patient?

PATIENT ATTENDS AN INITIAL CONSULTATION

A genetic counselor will review their health history and family health history. If genetic testing can help, a genetic counselor will walk them through their best options, tell them about the pros and cons and help them decide if they want to proceed. A genetic counselor can also help them understand if their insurance will cover the cost of their testing.

GENETIC TESTING

Depending on the test, genetic testing is usually done with a saliva sample or blood sample. On average, the amount of time it takes to test results is 3 weeks. If the patient needs to give a saliva sample, they will be sent a collection kit that they can return directly to the testing laboratory. If a blood sample is required, the patient will be scheduled to have their blood drawn at a time and place convenient for them. The wait time for results varies, depending on the test.

REVIEW RESULTS WITH A GENETIC COUNSELOR

Genetic test results can be complex. A genetic counselor will explain what their results mean—and don’t mean—so that the patient understands them and can meaningfully use the insights moving forward in their care.

INTEGRATION

A genetic counselor will create a personalized action plan so that the patient can take advantage of what they've learned and share it with their doctor. This could include adjustments to their health care. Their doctor is an important partner to help them maximize their proactive genetic test results.

WHAT IS GENETIC COUNSELING?

The Chance to Understand Your Risk for Cancer

If you have a personal or family health history of breast or ovarian cancer that indicates that you could have a BRCA1, BRCA2, or other inherited mutation, your doctor may refer you for genetic counseling. Understanding and dealing with a strong family health history of breast or ovarian cancer can be challenging for you and your family. Genetic counselors can help by providing information, resources, and support to you and your family.
